POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Junior Packaging Engineer plays a key role in supporting the design, development, and implementation of packaging solutions that meet product protection, cost efficiency, and sustainability goals. This entry-level position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a passion for packaging innovation and a desire to grow within a collaborative, fast-paced environment. The Junior Packaging Engineer works closely with cross-functional teams including product development, supply chain, and operations to ensure packaging solutions align with business objectives and customer expectations.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in Packaging Design:
- Support the creation of packaging concepts for new and existing products using CAD and prototyping tools.
- Participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews to contribute creative and functional ideas.
Support Material Selection:
- Research and recommend materials based on performance, cost, and environmental impact.
- Assist in maintaining a database of packaging materials and specifications.
Conduct Packaging Testing:
- Execute standard packaging tests (i.e. drop, vibration, compression) to validate performance.
- Document test results and assist in analyzing data to recommend improvements.
Contribute to Sustainability Initiatives:
- Identify opportunities to reduce packaging waste and improve recyclability.
- Support reporting on sustainability metrics and compliance with environmental standards.
Participate in Cost Optimization:
- Assist in evaluating packaging designs for cost-saving opportunities.
- Collaborate with suppliers to identify alternative materials or processes.
Collaborate with Suppliers:
- Communicate packaging requirements to external vendors and assist in sourcing.
- Participate in supplier evaluations and support quality assurance efforts.
Cross-Functional Project Support:
- Work with marketing, operations, and product teams to ensure packaging meets branding and operational needs.
- Provide technical input during product launches and packaging trials.
Ensure Regulatory Compliance:
- Support compliance with packaging regulations and industry standards (i.e. ISTA, ASTM).
- Assist in maintaining documentation for audits and certifications.
Maintain Documentation:
- Prepare and update packaging specifications, test reports, and change records.
- Organize packaging assets and maintain version control.
Drive Continuous Improvement:
- Participate in process improvement initiatives and lean manufacturing projects.
- Suggest enhancements to packaging workflows and tools.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Packaging Science, or a related field.
- 0-2 years of relevant experience in packaging (internships or co-ops included).
- Basic knowledge of packaging materials such as corrugate, plastics, and paperboard.
- Familiarity with CAD software (i.e. ArtiosCAD, SolidWorks) and prototyping tools.
- Understanding of packaging testing protocols and standards (i.e. ISTA, ASTM).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.
- Eagerness to learn and grow within the packaging engineering field.
